Death to Cult Rumors
You people slay me.
I go party in New Orleans for a few daze and up jumps 73 (or so) responses to the latest Cult rumor.
So here's the skinny.
Back on November 29, 2001, I saw The Cult open for Aerosmith in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (as well as a dozen other dates for the BG&E tour,.,).
I posted a review of the show at cultcentral.com that declared The Cult dead.
Thats: D.E.A.D. Dead.
Their record company cut them loose, their record didn't sell (last hit:1989), their singles didn't get radio play, the band didn't look like they
wanted to be on stage, the sold-out 15,000 seat arena in Ft. Lauderdale had only 1500 people's asses in seats during their set, the band allowed no
backstage access, they were tired and beaten down. Rumors of in-fighting started up.
Dozens of people responded to my review (WildJon refused to archive it) and called me everything from 'non-fan' to 'traitor' to 'assassin' to
'asshole' (I am that.).
I genuinely created a reaction from fans,., some of whom I still see are here,., and still with nothing to say.
One thing you can call me right now is "prophet". Thats right.
The band did 18 post-Fort Lauderdale gigs doing a 9 song warm-up for Aerosmith (a band from the same era who've re-created and outlived their own
death), and have done nothing since (save a couple of rescheduled commitments in California in the course of one week in October 2002.)
So dig this:
*Ian is commited to 'live' Doors shows through the end of 2003, including Europe & Japan.
*New Doors recording will continue in 2004, and I hear that the recording will be done independently (probably with the profits from $100 tour tix,.)
and then shopped for distribution.
*Record release,., mid-late 2004.
*Supporting tour,.,,, through 2005.
*Time off after all of this,.,. 6 months (mid-2006).
*Any 'new' Cult record would take a year to record. (2007). That puts Bill & Ian at mid 40's artists in an industry aimed at mid-20's buyers.
*That hunchbacked faggot Billy Morrison is out.
*"Bandmember" Matt Sorum is making a comeback with his old bandmates.
*You will never hear "Cult Dead" from Ian or Billy because there is still hope for you,., and you will continue to buy their records & videos
('residual income').
*Theres nothing going on (there won't be) with 'The Cult'; you may see an occasional date where Ian/Billy/?/?/? may play onstage together,.,. Camp
Billy?
*Expect Ian to cut a (mellow) solo record with pro musicians,., and it will be cutting edge and better than SpititLightSpeed.
*The band have nothing more to say. The band did the record Ian wanted to do (Ceremony), then the record they got great outside songwriting talent
with (Black Sheep), and then finally the crunchy rock record Billy wanted (BG&Evil).
Hobbadeebadabeebuhduh,., that's all folks.
So face it,.,. there wil be no more 'new' Cult music or tour, people,.,., but an oldies package of The Cult and Sisters of Mercy would be appealing
,.,.,.,.,.
I used to think Real Astbury Girl flaky and groupie and dumb for the things she posts.
Now I realize (in another moment of prophetic clarity) that she is doing us all the service of creating positive and loving eulogies in front of the
urn that contains the ashes of a great and wonderful rock experience that was The Cult.
So dig out your box set and listen to The Snake and 13 and Spanish Gold.
Look back fondly,.,., there is no future.
And when you hear the next rumor, refer back to this post.
And thats the bottom line,.,., cuz the MadMan says so.

Hi Mike. I always heard that Ceremony was from neither of them really...or a little of both, that neither got what they wanted in that one...and that
the 94 album was Ian's....either way, whatever happens...happens...I still have all my cds, etc. and I get alot from them. I'm thankful I got to
see them in 01...got to meet Ian, have the autograph, pic...I was lucky enough to have experienced all that...so I guess I'll just have to be happy
with that. But is there anything wrong with a bit of hope...a little faith? That's one thing that they taught me in my life...and I needed it.
Still do. Anyway...I respect your opinion....but...everyone else has one too.

To quote one of my band members.....
'It's all about how much you give a fuck.'
Nuff said.
There will be another Cult release.
Be it new or old.
It will happen.
But at the moment,
I could care less.
If Ian is writing the band off then he is a fool.
This band is still yet to achieve the acclaim it deserves.
Fuck it all and fucking no regrets I hit the lights on these dark sets.

same thing again MMMike
i know that you posted about the death of the Cult...
i did something similar on the Cultnet after talking with some friends after a show near Chitown (dec 14th Ottos Delkab)...the friends had chatted
with Matt after the show and he was saying that everything was going down the tubes...and that Ian and Billy were going to disolve the band after the
Alantic deal was in shreads
again...after a conversation with a MAIN CULT MEMBER namely IAN ASTBURY...the word from the man himself...was NO...
not MAYBE...
not SOMETIME...
not TOMORROW
he said
NO!!
but then lets face it...if someone waves a wad of greenbacks in yer face...and says...
Hey guys...how about a joint head liner alternating first on with The Sisters Of Mercy...or The Mission...and we make it a British 80's bands on tour
in America...dude...we could print money...check out that Doors shit!!
yeah i'd take that deal!!...
THE CULT ARE DEAD...long live the messageboards to remember them by!!
andie
From Velvet night came forth our torch burns eternal,
For time is but a dream and our mischeif be infernal,
Black Angels watch over neglecting the living but not the undead,
Blessed are the hallowed and gracious for their blood shall keep us fed,
Hark the electric thunder drawn like moths to a flame,
To a place of wicked wonder...and Hollywood be thy name.

MMMike:
... as for the "Ceremony" album, I also remember hearing that neither Ian nor Billy really takes credit for that one. That's partially why it was
disowned by them.
... not having a hit since 1989, "Pure Cult" came out in '93, and went to #1 on the charts (granted it was a "greatest hits/ best of" compilation but
still ... )
... and what was the "great outside songwriting talent" on the 1994 record? also, I remember hearing that this record was Ian's brainchild
lastly, I think that by the beginning of 2004 (at the latest) this deal with Ian and "The Singing Grampa's" will have run it's course, not lasting
until anywhere near 2005. that's okay though, I know where they can get a nnew singer:
as for The Cult being "dead" ... well, maybe. But there's always hope for a resurrection (joe) ... :D

No Joy,.,
A cynic is one who is distrustful of human nature and motives, and implies having a sneering disbelief in sincerity or integrity.
No cynicism intended.
Call the MadOne 'captious'.
The objective is to inspire thoughtful argument and make you wonder,.,., even if the observation is based in raising objections from thinking
people.
Don't agree with the criticism if you choose,., argue it if you have something to say,.,., but don't throw out words you do not understand. That's a
bore,.,.,

So what?
All things end, or do they?
Does it matter? NO it doesn't.
As a long time Sisters fan I've come to realize that. What I Want...Aint going to Happen.
Listen, they gave us Glory.
Do any of us need more?

It's a Madmad world
Interesting thoughts, my man...
I recall the pronoucement of death (I believe you actually said “washed up”, but it matters little), and I think it was as premature then as it is
now. While I think your critique has some really interesting points and some predictions that may possibly come to pass, the truly interesting thing
is the way in which you measure the band’s success, and conversely define their death. Things you listed like hit singles, radio airplay, concert
attendance and the like are all measures of [I]commercial[I] success. I find that particularly interesting because the Cult has always struggled with
being a commercial band that plays by commercial rules. The more one member pushes for commercial success, the more the other pulls back for artistic
experimentation. It’s the yin and yang of the Cult. It’s why there aren’t Aerosmith. The central question of what the Cult should be has never
been decided by it’s own members. That is, until Beyond Good and Evil. That record was the last great push for commerial immortality and that
elusive “legend” status that only a handful of bands acheive. They failed. At least, commercially.
My suggestion following the tolling of the bell was that the Cult needed to change the way they do business, especially in a business that is
undergoing radical changes anyway. Rather than rely on commercial entities and measures to define success or failure, they need to create a model
where their success is defined by them. Other bands have shown that you can produce and sell records independently and still be profitable. The Cult
should consider such a move if they feel they still have something to offer the Cult Army (Reserves perhaps?). Ian can only be happy for so long
singing karaoke for a dead man. The day will come again when he’ll want to express himself in a more forceful way then the Doors will allow, and
sitting a room with Chris Goss and Witchman ain’t gonna cut it. Yes, the days of conquering the world are over, but the music needn’t be. We
haven’t heard the last from the Cult yet, I say. Who’s with me?

I'm in too. I think sooner or later he'll get tired of doing the Doors thing. They ain't the real Doors, never will be, make a new record with only
two of them...still ain't them. He makes great music with Billy....he knows it...and I believe he'll come back.

More Interesting
Becuz, Joy,.,. I started this thread and anyone else who responded to it said nothing that could be translated into 'cynicism'.
You are correct though. I don't believe that you directed 'cynicism' at me ,.,., personally,.,. but at the tone of my post.
I stand corrected and apologize for ever acknowledging any post Orlando has put up on this board,.,.,,

Ceremony
Interesting to read that neither Billy or Ian want to take credit for the Ceremony Album.
EXERPTS OF DUFFY INTERVEIW WITH MIKE GEE W.A. NEWSPAPER OCTOBER 10th 1991
"We really put a lot into it. Most importantly we upheld and even approved the quality of our songwriting. There's some really good songs right
through to the end of the album. It isn't like so many albums where once you get halfway through the quality begins to fall off.
Ceremony reflects what we have been through and what we have learnt about ourselves and life. We've now reached a more relaxed level.
Ian is a little happier now and contributing a little more. It used to be that I do the guitar solos, he writes the lyrics. Now he is more of a team
player. He helped to make the record balance and it is quite a complete record. I've just turned 30, Ian is 29, we're fairly much established in the
middle ground. This is our fifth album and it is more relaxed. I guess we could always sell a few more records but, to be honest, until now we weren't
equipped to deal with mass success. If we had got the kind of success Guns 'n' Roses have achieved Ian would have lost his mind and I'd have lost mine
in a totally different way. We are private people. I don't want my life to become a three-ring circus. I want people to listen to us because we are
good not because we are friendly".
It goes on to tell the story of how Richie Zito came to produce the album.
I am pretty damned sure all songs on Ceremony were penned by Astbury/ Duffy. So who would they like to take the credit for this commercial "flop"?
On the other side of the coin, the interview published in same newspaper with Ian doing the talking, he had little to say about the release of
Ceremony but a lot to say about Bob Rock and Metallica.
EXCERPTS OF ASTBURY INTERVIEW WITH LISA ANTHONY
In a more unpredictable move they decided to use crumbled, old AOR producer Richie Zito. For heavens sake, he produces Heart! There was also a
conscious decision not to use Bob Rock who produced Sonic Temple why?
I.A. "We went to Bob Rock and nailed him on everything we thought was wrong with Sonic Temple. The guitars
too middle of the road, the stinky arrangements. He was cool - he knew what we were saying. We talked about how we wanted rhythm and cellos, but in
the end we decided that too much had been said and done between us and went our separate ways. It's funny how he went away and put cellos on
Metallica. It's also funny how they have become household names in America. Just goes to show how many sexually-frustrated boys there
are. That's who Metallica are selling to. The album is like a gathering space for little boys. It's alright for them I suppose, but I
am not really inspired or intrigued by songs about Sandman. I don't think 30 year old geezers should be writing about comic book characters.
A lot of musicians say they please themselves when they're just trying to make records that sell. A lot of them talk bollocks. After what we'd been
through, what happened to us we got to planning Ceremony. Billy and I sat down and said to each other "Why are we in this"? And we
remembered. We're doing this because we love music and that's that, end of story".

Interesting read. Different point of view from both...so where did the story come from that neither got what they wanted from Ceremony? Or was it
just a media thing? Thanks for the story. :D

Those comments were made at the time Ceremony was being promoted, so they have to be taken in the proper context.
Every band promotes their current album as if it were their seminal work. During spring training, every baseball team says they think they can compete
for a championship no matter how bad everyone knows they really are. Every car company swears their newest model is the best-to-date, whether it is or
not.
Perhaps they're caught up in the moment, or perhaps they're just shrewd promoters, but the comments that really matter come after the advertising push
is over, and like the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Ford Thunderbird, Ceremony has not fared well in hindsight by the ones who made it. Check out the
booklet included in the Rare Cult box for one of many examples.
