For Homer

Homer, you have made several valid points. Here's my response.

X, the latest release initiallly, well, put me to sleep. Literally, I put it on before bedtime...snooze a-amatic. Its' not til 4 letter word do they even Rock. X is one that takes a bit of listening. I do like it. But I like the romantic sappy ballads they do it for me every time. It's just me. Hey I'm a girl!

All the rehash of Hysteria? Yes you are right. But I liked that one, a lot! So did many others...as record sales prove out.

Slang.....IMHO is garbage. It's a grunge wannabe....If I wanted grunge and I don't, I'd be a Nirvana fan. I'm not.
Back to X. I can say the same for X... Boy band knock off. I hate boy bands, nevertheless I like this one. I'm in love, I'm in deep yeah yeah...may have some bearing on why I dig this one so much.. back to those sappy love ballads.

Euphoria..I really like this one. If you are lucky enough to gather up all the extar tracks they are well worth the time.

Adrenalize/Retro....yeah yeah....Hysteria rehashes..but I Liked Hysteria. I mean come on, Desert Song, and Fractured Love aren't kick ass enough for you?

Ok, Two Steps Behind.....Do you NOT have a heart? So it's an accoustical love ballad. It's a really good one. It beats Michael Bolton any day!!! I love this song.

As for touring vs making records. Island, their label SUCKS royally. They are more into pushing that crass piano band from Jersey, BJ! And yes I think over the years the Band has succombed to pressures...(Slang and X). In live performance, I've been to two in the last 9 mos. they kick ass in every respect. I mean come on, what band can pull off TWO guitar solos ....Switch 625 and Disintegrate? in one gig? Utterly awesome live! Which brings me to your last point...mayber they should just tour....VERY good point. Perhaps that's what they should do.

Enjoyed the discussion!

for PlanetGirl:

not to beat this thing to death but, on "X", "Four Letter Word" is one of the better songs on that record (It's one of only two songs on that record that I could listen to all the way through, [the other being the first song "Now"]) but it's basically just "Armageddon It, Part II" listen to "Armageddon It." then "Four letter Word" again: same song structure, same basic guitar riff, same everything! "HYSTERIA REHASH PART FIVE"

"Slang" again the band sounds good they just didn't bother to write any good songs for that record. On "Hysteria" and "Hysteria Part II/ a.k.a. "Adrenalize" you couldn't really hear the guitars and drums behind all of the effects! Too much layering and phasing and delays, Elliott's voice was reduced to a whisper on alot of songs, the drums were all done through fairlight computerzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ... oh, sorry I didn't mean to doze off like that. On "Slang" they went back to just guitar, drums and vocals. Period. No remixes, no effects. That's what I meant when I said the band sounds good, but they just didn't write any interesting songs, except "Work it Out" and yes, it was grunge wannabe about a half a decade after grunge faded away ...

what you don't realize about "Adrenalize" (1992) & "RetroActive" (1993) albums is that they ARE part of "Hysteria"!!! Read the jacket sleeve to those records - Steve Clark is credited with cowriting and performing on those songs even though (sadly) he died in January of 1991! The songs on both records are unfinished songs from the "Hysteria" writing sessions, b - sides etc. NOTHING NEW that's why I call them "Hysteria ripoff parts II & III"

"Two steps Behind" was a b - side to one of the singles from "Hysteria" and a bad one at that. No one listens to Leppard because they want to hear ballads they listen to Leppard because they want to rock like "On through the Night", "H N D" & "Pyro." albums did! not to hear ballads.

next:
"Vault ... " wasn't a best of/greatest hits compilation, it was just the singles from "Hysteria parts I & II" "Make Love Like a Man" did not belong on a "best of" record! nor did "Animal" for that matter ...

as far as touring, I definatley think they should NEVER do another record again, just go out and tour every few years, but NO MORE ALBUMS!!!
and by what I've heard about their live shows latley maybe I'd check them out if I get the chance and can afford it - it would be cool to hear some of the OLDER SONGS live again ...

now if they would just do something off of the "On Through the Night" album ...

First. LOL at Doug... For christ's sake, BJ? I'd rather gag on a pill than have to listen to that shit. Crappy piano bands!~

Ok Homer...your points are valid and well taken. I personaly like love ballads. I like the harmonies.

I will give a close listen to what you told me to look for, I got the tapes in my car. And see what I can see. Thanks for the suggestion.

I do agree, DL doing another album.....may not be a good idea. Unless they get another label.

Go see them live, I think you will like it. The HND set list is really good. And I liked it alot better than the Pyro/Hysteria they played at the first gig I saw.

Ok, do you not like Scar? from X? I find that one of the best. And you liked Now? Wow? I wouldn't have thought that.

I never thought I'd see that name on here.
You should be banished from the site :P

Not my cup of tea I was into U2 and Simple Minds when they was sort of big in the UK.

Banned? That's rather harsh I think since Homer and I are having an adult discussion regarding a band we both like. This is the OFF Cult section isn't it?

Oh and Homer....I never actually bought any DL. I got all mine off the internet! So it just dawned on me, (yeah I'm always late to the party!) what you were trying to tell me!!!!!!!!!!! You are 100% right, Retro and Adrenalize are very Hysteria like. But remember, I like Hysteria. Im really not a metal person, at all, I'm totallly, 1980's Brit New Wave, and ...er,.... a bit Goth in my musical taste. DL is the Only Rock band I like! Oh beside Thin Lizzy. :) But you are right....

Hey I like them. I have fun. I wish they would do more kick ass rock becasue they just have this Sound...which I know you know what it is...that's wonderful. Hey I have had fun talking to you about DL. Take care Homer.

Sorry, what was your name? I digressed...short attention span when I have to deal with people that insult me ( and others) to my face.

I happen to like U2, New Year's Day being a favorite, just remember they sold out TOO!!!!! They suck now!!! and also Simple Minds. I seem to remember seeing Jim Kerr doing his "fairy"dance in those tights sometime in the 80's.

I side with Gabewave and ROMI on this one...bring on Echo & The Bunnymen, Siouxsie, Duran Duran (yes, I said it!) you name it. I've got tons of those "Living In Oblivion" cds, not mention watching all of the "I Love the 80's" on VH1. Just can't get enough. Seems like I only buy shit from the 80's these days anyway...just picked up a used Siouxsie "Tinderbox" CD--I have the vinyl , so what a score!:D

I did most of my growing up in the 80's.....

graduated from college in '89. And when someone says "oldschool" in reference to that decade, I immediately think of The Cure, Depeche Mode, INXS, Billy Idol, New Order, Gene Loves Jezebel, Modern English, Psychedelic Furs, Simple Minds, Siouxsie, Bauhaus.......also Black Flag, Fear, Husker Du, Minor Threat, the Circle Jerks, the Dead Milkmen, Suicidal Tendancies, Dead Kennedys.........damn, those were the days!

Ok, now I'm feeling old & nostalgic.

Oh, and Hove, I too own the Living in Oblivion cd's - they're mandatory in the car listening.

Damn Linda, you just named everything that mattered to me about growing up in the 80's. FEAR! Damn been awhile since I heard that name.

Remember "Decline of the Western Civiliazation part 1" when Lee Ving kicked that chick in the face. Now that was FEAR. About 8 to 10 years ago I met Lee at a show in Minnesota, they opened the show and the other bands were Fear Factory, Korn, Floatsom & Jetsom, and Megadeth. Lee was very very nice and I had a great chat with him about his work with Dave Mustaine on the MD.45 record. I dislike Megadeth emensly as well as Dave Mustaine (On VH1 he said something about keyboard players not having a place in rock music a la a reference to DEVO) thus shooting him to the top of my Celebrity Dead Poll list. Never underestimatie the power of the keyboard player or the programmer.

Oh well, thank you once again Linda for reminding me of my age and influence.

Oh and before I forget,

Hove, Romi, Linda, and others of the same blood line musicaly, Andie (Dogstar/Black Angel) sent me the most wonderful book of all time. It's a collection of interviews by Charles Neal with great artists/musicians/performers that were changing the world in the early 80's. It's amazing.

It's called "Tape Delay: Confessions from the 80's Underground" and features interviews with New Order, Sonic Youth, Gensis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic Youth, COUM Transmissions, etc. etc.) Coil, Chris & Cosey, Henry Rollins, Lydia Lunch, Einstruzende Neubauten, Cabaret Voltair, Boyd Rice, Nick Cave, and so many more I can't remember cause the book isn't sitting in front of me right now. You really must find this book and read it. It is amazing!

Hey ... You stole my record collection.

Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks and Black Flag are some of my all time favorites, I grew up with all this stuff, And Still love it all ... Yeah even with all the crackles jumps, fizzing and poping.... It just sounds right that way .... To hell with C.D.s and digital recording. I want my Goddamn warped and scratched vinyl...
Even buying a turn table is a problem now... What the hells that all about?

Ok ... I'm off to mosh with the Jerks

Fix bayonets, check grenades. Got enough bullits? got enough rounds? to wipe out this place.
