Cult + Ford = $$$$$$$$$
In addition to the Nissan commercial we have all seen, Sanctuary has been sold to Ford also. Saw a commercial last night (in Canada anyways) with the
old familiar riff we all know. Even get a little bit of Ian singin some lyrics. Still got some marketablilty I guess!
woke up this morning, my head felt like a warzone cause I drank a river last nite on route #66 to Zap City..................

I hate comercial world!
Last evening I was passing by a store with jeans articles and saw in a window a t-shirt with Jim Morrison! But it's not like a fan stuff, you know,
it's fashion! I can't imagine people who have no idea who is Jim wearing these t-shirts!

just gonna throw my 2 cents in here & say that i really dislike it when bands sell their tunes to commercials. i more than dislike it, i hate it.
nothing against the artists specifically, because i understand that it's about the $ for them, and some of them need it. i think companies and
advertisers that use popular songs are lazy and lack both the initiative and the creativity to create a unique ad, and i hate hearing anyone's song on
a commercial, whether i really like the artist or not. it doesnt make me want to buy their product - it makes me want to turn the channel.
ok, i feel better now.

Does anyone know how much control Ian and Billy really have over the usage of their back catalog? My feeling is that since Beggars owns the rights to
that particular recorded version of Sanctuary, it is they who are brokering these deals with Nissan, Ford, et al, and not Ian and Billy (though they
surely get compensated for having written the song).
The last two times Ian has been on Jim Ladd's show (once with the Doors, once with Billy), Jim has commented that he really respects the surviving
members of the Doors for not selling their music to advertisers, thus commercializing the legacy of the band. Does anyone think Ian wants to crawl
under the table when he hears a comment like that?

Hey Kevin,
I think it is hard to know what goes through his mind most of the time...but...my bet will be YES  , down there deep inside I think he is not fond of the commercial aspects of the music business ... otherwise, The
Cult would have walked a different way years ago, like avoiding multiple line ups, using Ian and Billy's talent to create music and lyrics that were
more radio appealing etc .
I believe that most of the time it was "Fuck it, let's do it , let's do as we want to do it !" . Tons of respect for both of them for that Just my two cents.

They have definitely commented publicly (I remember hearing/reading, just not where) that they endorsed the "Nissan" commerical. Something along the
lines of ....if they want to pay you six figures for part of your song, why not? You have to pay the bills and feed your kids. If I remember
correctly, it was before they signed with Atlantic, so the money prolly didn't hurt.

I agree in theory, Jay. I'm just not so sure the band has been entirely successful at staying true to those principles over the years. While it's no
real shock, and is certainly forgivable, that a bunch of 20-year-olds with nothing to lose would sell their souls to a corporate record label for
potential fame a fortune, it's slightly difficult to understand how the same bunch of guys, now 40-ish, can chant "we are not chained to the wheel"
after voluntarily doing exactly that with Atlantic records.
Ever since the Atlantic implosion, Ian and Billy have both expressed their displeasure with the corporate rock experience, yet offer no explanation
for why they spent the better part of a year courting record companies, followed by two years "jumping through hoops", as Ian says, for the winning
bidder. If they were hungry for the exposure that a big label can provide, it seems to me they should have been well aware of the costs that come with
such an arrangement.
I'm not suggesting that Ian or Billy did anything wrong, but often I find that they are portrayed as noble martyrs up against the corporate music
industry, and I just don't believe that. Those two have played corporate ball for a lot of years, and let's face it — they've exploited the medium
as much as it's exploited them.
That's my two cents. Can I get change?
