Phoenix Show...

By TracyJ from Doors board...

Sorry, was in a hurry this morning - here is a list of the songs that I can remember and also my personal little review:

Roadhouse Blues
Wild Child
Five to One
Wild Child
Touch Me
Light My Fire
Riders on the Storm
LA Woman
Horse Latitudes
People are Strange
Love me Two Times
Break on Through
Moonlight Drive
Peace Frog
I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, they did quite a big from Absolutely Live

The show was unbelievable, Ian was awesome, he cut his hair like Jims and he came out in tight jeans, black tshirt and a leather jacket and sun glasses, he had the entire stage thing down exactly like Jim (minus the rolling on the ground moaning part - during the noodling music when Jim would have been doing that he simply stood with his back to the audience and shook his cute butt)- His voice was just great, he just has that very deep booming voice -no one else could have carried the show like that, he sounded exactly like Jim- except when he talked he has a british accent- he talked about how Jim Morrison and the Doors had been such a huge influence on him and that he couldn't believe that he had to chance to be up there with Ray and Robbie, you could tell he was excited as hell to be doing it. In the beginning they had a picture of Jim on the backdrop and then it changed to a continuous video -which was mostly clips from Doors videos and movies and stuff - on stage there was a black music kinda holder and Ian said it was there to represent Jim as a Poet. He did a lot of the songs that werekinda spoken poetry, very very cool.

When the lights came on, I headed toward the exit by the stage but my husband started up the stairs so I turned and followed him instead, then 1/2 way up the stairs they came out and played one more song (Soul Kitchen) with the lights on- and then people started jumping up on stage - I was pissed, if we had gone toward the lower exit I would have made in on stage!!!!!!! By the end you couldn't tell where the stage ended there were so many people up there - Ian was standing on the base of the drum set and tons of people were standing up there with him, you could barely see him- and the entire audience sang along with every song, I've never been to a show (even a deadshow!) where everyone seemed to know every word to every song and sang along to
everything!!!

Another one by slstier fan...

If you have ANY doubts about this band, put them away. They came into Phoenix last night and put on a major ass-kicking! I was in the 13th row from the stage, and I heard it all. It was spectacular. Ray and Robbie were all that you'd expect. But Ian . . . WOW!! I never saw the Doors the first time around, but if their shows were anything like what happened last night, then the hagiographical reviews were accurate. The vocals were great, sometime eerily so. The performance was wonderful. If I sound somewhat vague, I'm trying not to give too much away. And if you're disappointed that John or Stewart Copeland aren't keeping time . . . you won't be once the music starts. I was right in front of the drum speakers . . . the time was right on, the fills were right, and the hi-hat was clear as day. My only crab about the show was the speakers on both sides were overdriven from the bass, but that's the venue problem, not the Doors. One other temptation . . . they mentioned doing a new recording where they'll rework some of the Doors catalog with different vocalists. They played one such song last night, and it was great. It wasn't different to be different, it worked. And so were many of the songs they played . . . familiar enough, but with enough added to keep the songs fresh. All the songs were great, although "Ghost Song" kind of slows things down. LA Woman was a major high point in a show of many. PS - Don't leave until the final encore of "Soul Kitchen". Last night, it was a magical finale.

:D

totally wicked reviews there...maybe the Doors thing is going better than everyone hoped or expected...

i wonder what the doors messageboards are making of this?!!!??

From Velvet night came forth our torch burns eternal,
For time is but a dream and our mischeif be infernal,
Black Angels watch over neglecting the living but not the undead,
Blessed are the hallowed and gracious for their blood shall keep us fed,
Hark the electric thunder drawn like moths to a flame,
To a place of wicked wonder...and Hollywood be thy name.

i hate to say "i told you so"

damn, i'm a bad liar, I TOLD YOU IAN WAS GOING TO BE GREAT!!! i did, i did, just ask edcult or cpjfan!!!

come on, how could any real cult fan not think that ian was gonna kick ass standing in for jim? you may not like the idea, i know i'd really like to see the cult again, and i'd rather see the cult than the doors. but that's not an option right now. we have no idea whether the doors project is holding up a new cult collaboration, or if it's filling in time that would have been otherwise empty cult-wise. but we can't change things no matter what the situation. so i say just go with it, cuz it's all good, baby.

doggie, to answer your question about the dorrs message boards, i haven't read any bad fan reviews. all the nay-sayers and ian haters are apparently staying home. or they enjoyed themselves and don't have the balls to admit it.

i know i can't wait for april 26th. i've been waiting for this since august!

Linda :flip: (that's me jumping up & down in excited anticipation)

STRANGE DAYS 2003: The doors 21st century in Phoenix

An updated version of the classic band, The Doors rolled into Phoenix yesterday for a performance at the Dodge Theater.
Original members Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger were joined by Ian Astbury on vocals. Ty Dennis and Angelo Barbera, two members of Robby Krieger's jazz-rock band, backed up the ensemble on drums and bass.

This current line-up has received both praise and criticism, as some purists haven't been happy with anyone other than Jim Morrison on vocals. Unfortunately, the group's original drummer, John Densmore, was invited but couldn't join because of a medical condition.

Whatever you may think of this band, the Doors aesthetic continues to live. The band opened the gig with favorites "Roadhouse Blues" and "Break On Through". Cinematic images flickered all evening on a large screen at the rear of the stage. We heard the spoken poetry of James Douglas Morrison, and experienced a small segment that included the sacred movements of two Native American dancers.

The theatrical "Alabama Song" was followed by the Chicago blues classic, "Back Door Man." A politically charged "Five to One" was followed by what seemed to be a fresh, 2003 version of "Strange Days." Musical improvisation ruled during the long jam on "Light My Fire". Listening to Ray Manzarek stretch out on keyboards, his unique use of intervals and keyboard gesture, is always a highlight to the Doors fan. When it was Robby's turn, the crowd couldn't wait to here that familiar guitar tone, with a few improvised notes - the "Kriegeresque" runs of electric notes.

The crowd called for an encore and got it. After the house lights came on at the end of the show, the band surprised everyone and got it together - "one more time". The remaining crowd at the Dodge Theater was treated to "Soul Kitchen" as countless audience members jumped onstage to dance with the band.

This wasn't the original line-up, but it's the most accurate Doors ensemble that anyone will see in 2003. The poetry of the Doors continues via two of the original members and many other friends. I imagine it will continue for a long time.

More praise to The Doors & Ian by BOWLS fan... :D

Last nights performance at the Dodge theater in PHX by the DOORS 21st CENTURY was nothing less than magical. The theater was packed[cap;5000] and from my 5th row seat looking back would be hard pressed to find a empty seat. There was no opening act, showtime was 7:30 but the lights dimmed at 8:01 and after a few minutes
Ray appeared from the left of the stage,Ty,Robbie, Angello then IAN
followed.LADIES & GENTLEMAN;THE DOORS.

The crowd went into a frenzy and the band began to play ROADHOUSE BLUES.We stood up and did not sit down the entire show, including I managed to make it on stage during the final encore along with appx. 40 others singing and dancing. What a great time,PURE ROCK & ROLL!! This was my third show[fontana, hollywood & now phoenix].WOW! It's all been great, A MUST SEE SHOW!!

The only negative was security was uptight and seemed to be very nervous at the end including turning the house lights on after MAGGEE MAGILL, with hopes to end the show BUT Ray came out and told all of us WE GOT MORE TO PLAY!.

The set list included PEACE FROG but was not played.Heres the list;

ROADHOUSE BLUES
BREAK ON THROUGH
WHEN THE MUSIC'S OVER
LOVE ME TWO TIMES
ALABAMA SONG
BACKDOOR MAN
5 TO 1
PEOPLE ARE STRANGE
STRANGE DAYS
SPANISH CARAVAN
GHOST SONG
MOONLIGHT DRIVE
WILD CHILD
L.A.WOMAN
LIGHT MY FIRE
-------------
RIDERS ON THE STORM
MAGGIE MAGILL
-------------
SOUL KITCHEN....
-------------
PEACE FROG[NOT PLAYED] I am PRETTY SURE They stuck to the set list, but I partied very hard so I'm not 100%. I was able to meet Ian after the show in the stage hallway before security booted my ass??Now I've met the entire band. VERY COOL!!!.
