Ianswildflower, I think you can post your own avatar but you need to make sure the pixels do not exceed a certain limit.

Go to "Your control Panel", then to"Edit profile" and type the adress to a picture of a webpage in the field "avatar Url"
max size of the picture is 117x145 I think.
