I can't decide on this movie or not: I like that kind of really gory horror flick, but there is a very fine line between "gory" and "cheesy"
and this movie looks like it's right on that edge. Rob Zombie did a great looking music video/remake of "Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari (The Cabinet
of Doctor Caligari)" - a German film from 1919, which, as strange as this may sound, has always been a favourite of mine - so that gives me hope for

Perhaps even scarier than Rob Zombie's feature film directorial debut, the upcoming horror flick House of 1,000 Corpses, is a collaboration included
on the soundtrack: The Nineties metalman and former Commodore Lionel Richie updating the Seventies' classic "Brick House."
"When Rob called me on the phone he was so nervous," Richie says. "I said, 'Rob, why do you seem nervous?' He said, 'Just come over.' And he played
this track for me, and it blew me away. He Zombarized it. Under no circumstances was he thinking the Commodores. And I said, 'Give me a microphone man
. . . you can't have "Brick House" without some howse in it. You're not saying howwwse right.' Well he fell out laughing. The next thing we knew, we
were slapping hands. And he said, 'Man, this is gonna scare people to death.'"
The cover wasn't entirely random. Zombie's film is set in 1977, and in the background of one scene, the original version of the song plays. But Zombie
wanted the soundtrack to feature some new material, which provided the catalyst for the unlikely "Brick House 2003." "I was shooting around ideas one
night and the idea of doing that song with Lionel came up," Zombie says. "It seemed like such a ridiculous idea. Can you think of two people less
suited to being in the studio recording together? It's one of those things where once you say it, you gotta do it. It's just so ridiculous."
Richie says he first heard Zombie's music back when he was fronting White Zombie ("If you asked me if I ever thought there'd be a time we'd get
together in the future to work together," he says, "the answer would be, 'Hell no.'"), but the two didn't meet until a year-and-a-half ago. "When he
first came by the house," Richie recounts, "my housekeeper answered the door and said, 'Mr. Richie, there's a Mr. Zombie at the front door.' He showed
up, this long hair, dark glasses, dark beard, blue jacket, ripped pants, red-toed combat boots, and I love the question my housekeeper asked . . .
'Where would you like me to put him?' I said, 'Let him in the living room.'"
Despite his intimidating appearance, Zombie claims that he was the one daunted by Richie. "He's one of those guys who's always got a story," he says.
"He would tell these crazy stories, and I'd think, 'My God, I forgot he did that.' He'd say things like, 'Well, when I was writing "We Are the World .
. ."' I was intimidated. I forgot he's sold 200 billion records. What's he doing in here with me again?"
The song is one of five new Zombie tracks that will be included on the soundtrack, along with "Everybody Scream!," "Run, Rabbit, Run," "Little Piggy"
and "Pussy Hammer." "Those are the songs that pay the bills," Zombie says, laughing. "Without those songs, I couldn't have gotten the money to make
the soundtrack. They're in the opening credits and end credits. I didn't want it to feel out of time. It wouldn't make any sense having a Rob Zombie
song on the radio in 1977."
Zombie played mix-tape-maker with the rest of the soundtrack, including some classic country (Buck Owens' "Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass"), punk (the
Ramones' "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue") and soul, courtesy of Zombie's spiritual predecessor Screamin' Jay Hawkins. "I used to love soundtrack
albums," he says, "but they've become so horrible over the years because they so rarely reflect the film. They more reflect the record company's
wishes to sell albums. This soundtrack, I really wanted to put songs like Buck Owens and Slim Whitman and that were appropriate to the film. You
always worry about selling records, but I just wanted to serve the movie first."
House of 1,000 Corpses sat in limbo for more than a year, having been jettisoned by Universal, and seemed poised for a straight-to-video path. But the
film was picked up last fall by Lion's Gate and will enjoy a theatrical run that starts nationwide April 11th.
"I already know how it's going to be perceived," Zombie says. "There's only going to be two kinds of reactions, people who love it and people who
fucking hate it. Which I guess is good. The funny thing is the people who are liking it the most are the people who don't like horror movies. I think
that's because the movie is quirky and weird and character driven, when they thought it was going to be more one two three slash 'em up."
The House of 1,000 Corpses soundtrack is due March 18th.
