are you using a pick or do you play with your fingers? I basically use a pick because I don't want my poor fingers fucked up:D I think it's easier to play with a pick. what do you say?

my favourite bassers are using a pick:

Hi LJ.

Go check out Jaco Pastorius from the band weather report. Tunes such as punk jazz and teen town are great. he didnt use no pick and he played some mad lines.
Your fingers just need practice and hardening up. You'll play quicker eventually without a pick.

I think Jamie sometimes did'nt use a pick.

I play fingerstyle, but sometimes practice with a pick.

I actually find it harder using a pick- I can't quite play "ressurrection joe" with a pick as Jamie Stewart did, but fingerstyle it's pretty easy for me.

for me it's much easier to play with a pick, maybe because I've always rocked my guitar with a pick;)

ok guys, but it's IMPOSSIBLE to play the Ace of Spades by Motörhead with fingerstyle! that's a typical "distortion-bass played with a pick" song by Lemmy Kilmister!

do you mean it's impossible to get that exact tone, or impossible to play that rhythm with fingers?

I've played it fingerstyle with a covers band- the rhythm isn't that difficult.
dunno how close the tone was, but it's not far off with a dictortion pedal and a trebly amp setting.

well, I think I keep on playing with a pick, cause I'm used to it because of my guitar. that finger style is something for real bassers, but I ain't no bassist, I'm guitarist;)
I just play bass for fun and for some rhythm when I record songs

I can't quite play either of those two lines with a pick as I can't get the string-skipping bits right.

I suppose a pick feels natural for some people, fingerstyle for others.

that clip was a cheap Dearmond jetstar special that I put a Kent armstrong Musicman pickup in (so it gives a stingray-type sound).

I have a Fender Precision plus, a Warmoth parts P bass, a Hohner B2A headless, cheap Yamaha fretless, Hohner acoustic bass, and an Eko semi-acoustic bass.

the warmoth gets the most use for gigs, and the Hohner B2A for rehearsals.

This is coming down from the other board (Justin) we chatted on email a few times and I'm a big fan of The Now... I was meaning to ask you, but I changed my email and lost all my contacts, if I could get a copy of the disc of yours that's sold on mp3.com without going through them because really they don't need a cut of the profits... more than happy to pay the same price for it... just think it should go to you guys directly if it's possible...

Hi,
I dropped you an email a while ago about new song Star of Angels being up at mp3.com.

as for the CD, I'm afraid buying it off mp3.com is the only way to go.
to be honest I don't know if The Now exist any more.
Neil still hasn't got the vocals done for tracks we recorded a year ago, and the last I heard from him was an email over a month ago-

we had decided to fire the drummer due to his poor timing, but above all his increasingly overbearing arguing and generally neurotic behaviour.

it's basically up to neil whether he's got the inclination to continue the band.

I'm currently gigging and recording with another band- the material's poppier than the Now, but the overall atmosphere is a lot more workable and productive than The Now ever was.
